Role Summary
The General Labour - Packer position is responsible for packing premium-quality produce into the correct containers, labeling it accurately, and ensuring it meets food safety, quality, and customer requirements. The role also helps keep the supply chain running smoothly by meeting productivity and efficiency goals.
Responsibilities
- Examine fresh vegetables visually, sort them by ripeness, size, and grade, and pack them according to customer requirements.
- Check produce and packaging for foreign material, pests, or contamination concerns and escalate issues to authorized personnel.
- Handle produce carefully to avoid bruising or damage while maintaining line, food safety, and quality standards established by supervisors.
- Stay in regular contact with the Production Supervisor and report quality concerns, product damage, or shortages of produce and packaging.
- Clean and sanitize food-contact surfaces and production equipment, keep the work area tidy throughout the shift, and report equipment damage or mechanical issues to the appropriate staff.
- Follow SOPs, GMPs, food safety rules, health and safety practices, and company policies and procedures at all times.
- Carry out any additional duties assigned by the company.
Requirements
- Secondary school diploma or an equivalent qualification is preferred.
- No prior experience is necessary, though familiarity with packhouse operations is an advantage.
- Basic knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices, health and safety, and food safety is preferred.
- Ability to stay self-driven and work effectively both alone and as part of a team.
- Comfort working in a busy, fast-moving environment with strong attention to detail.
Working Conditions
Work hours can change based on business requirements, so flexibility is important. The role is based in a refrigerated warehouse with temperatures typically between 45–55°F. The environment may be noisy because of packaging machinery and forklift activity.
The job regularly involves standing, walking, bending, twisting, using hands to handle or feel product and packaging, and reaching with arms and hands. It also requires lifting up to 30 pounds regularly and as much as 50 pounds occasionally.
