About the role
ALS Environmental in Hamilton, New Zealand is looking for an experienced Assistant Laboratory Manager to help keep the laboratory running safely, efficiently, and to a consistently high standard. This is a practical leadership position for someone with strong technical capability, proven people-management experience, and a solid focus on customers and quality.
You will work alongside the Laboratory Manager and the Production team to coordinate priorities, staffing, turnaround commitments, and technical reporting, while making sure quality, safety, and compliance expectations are met every day.
Key responsibilities
- Help organise workflow, balance workloads, and manage turnaround time targets.
- Oversee staffing allocation, cross-training, and daily team supervision.
- Offer technical assistance to clients and internal stakeholders.
- Work through issues related to samples, reports, and turnaround across ALS locations.
- Support quality systems, audit results, and ongoing improvement activities.
- Ensure health, safety, and environmental standards are followed at all times.
About you
You should hold a tertiary science qualification, ideally in Chemistry or a related discipline, and bring at least 5 years of laboratory experience, including 2 years in a supervisory position. The role calls for strong communication, planning, leadership, and computer skills, along with careful attention to detail and a customer-first mindset. A good understanding of business fundamentals and a strong commitment to quality, safety, teamwork, and ALS values are also important.
Quality responsibilities
- Make sure all testing and related work follows ALS quality systems and procedures.
- Keep records accurate and ensure equipment maintenance is current.
- Protect the integrity of data and all laboratory processes at all times.
Health, safety, and environment
- Follow ALS health, safety, and environmental policies and lab safety procedures.
- Use the right precautions when handling samples with unknown hazards.
- Report unsafe behaviour and environmental risks and take action where needed.
- Contribute actively to a strong safety and sustainability culture.
- Comply with all relevant occupational health and safety laws.
