Sub-Officer

Role overview

The Sub-Officer will act as a watch commander, leading and encouraging teams that respond to fires, rescues, and other emergencies so situations are controlled quickly and do not worsen. The role also involves planning and running drills and exercises for the local community to strengthen both individual and team capability while maintaining a safe working environment.

Key duties

You will oversee the on-station watch and make sure routine as well as non-routine tasks are carried out effectively. This includes emergency response operations, drills and exercises, emergency vehicle handling, and preparedness-related activities.

Required experience and skills

• Completion of Basic Fire Fighter 1 and 2 (NFPA 1001) plus a Breathing Apparatus Wearer course.
• Completion of NFPA 1041 Fire Instructor 1 along with NFPA Fire Officer 1 and 2.
• Certification as a first aider up to first-responder level, including CPR and AED.
• A minimum of 7 years of experience as a firefighter or in an equivalent role within a commercial or industrial firefighting setup, civil fire service, or military fire service; alternatively, 3 years as a leading firefighter in QP.
• Valid driving licence, preferably for heavy vehicles.
• Strong technical ability to operate a wide range of modern firefighting and rescue equipment.
• Capability to assess an incident quickly on arrival, even in hazardous or confusing conditions, and give clear instructions to crews on scene.
• Ability to deal with fire and accident victims sensitively and remain composed in distressing situations.
• Intermediate language proficiency (QP L4) in both spoken and written form.

Education

Secondary school education completed.
