Position Overview
National Railroad Safety Services, Inc. (NRSS) is seeking a Railroad Flagger in West Palm Beach, Florida. This is a full-time field-based role reporting to the District Manager. The position is focused on keeping track workers safe by managing train movements and applying federal railroad safety standards across projects for major railroads, short lines, transit systems, state transportation agencies, and contractors.
Compensation
The pay range for this role is $25 to $37, depending on experience.
Key Duties
- Oversee on-site work activity and help keep the job site coordinated.
- Maintain communication with dispatchers, train crews, railroad personnel, and contractors.
- Conduct safety briefings before work starts.
- Apply and enforce railroad, state, and federal safety requirements.
- Verify that contractors complete the necessary training.
- Identify and report violations of rules or procedures.
- Prepare daily documentation of work performed.
- Protect on-track workers by following federal on-track safety rules.
Experience and Background
A minimum of 2 years’ experience is required with a Class 1 railroad, regional short line, transit system, State DOT Rail Division, railroad supplier, railroad contractor, or railroad consultant. Experience in the Maintenance of Way (MOW) department is preferred.
Skills and Qualifications
- Comfort using basic computer tools such as Citrix, email, phone systems, and text messaging applications.
- Ability to work with Android tablets and smartphones.
- Strong organizational habits and close attention to detail.
- Clear verbal and written communication skills.
- Working knowledge of railroad engineering, construction, design, and safety practices.
- Ability to develop and sustain client relationships.
- Willingness to travel extensively, including extended assignments lasting months.
- Ability to complete required federal, client, and company training.
Work Conditions
This role is performed in outdoor field environments and requires clear English communication in speaking, reading, and writing. The job involves frequent travel or long-distance driving, extended standing, walking on uneven surfaces, strong vision across near, far, color, and peripheral ranges, and working in hot, cold, dusty, and noisy conditions. Candidates must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
