Role overview
The Naturalist will lead and support 90-minute boat tours by sharing information, keeping guests informed, and observing passenger comfort and safety throughout the trip. The role also functions as the vessel’s First Mate, assisting the Captain as needed. Work includes pre-trip and post-trip cleaning of the boat, along with some time handling cash register duties.
What you will do
- Support the Captain as First Mate, which may include delivering the safety briefing before departure.
- Teach visitors about Everglades Park history, along with crocodiles, manatees, and the area’s birdlife.
- Keep an eye on all passengers to make sure they remain safe and comfortable.
- Clean and ready the vessel before trips and after trips.
- Keep expanding knowledge of marine mammals, birds, and the Flamingo area.
- Handle some cashier-related tasks during assigned hours.
Required background and knowledge
A background in the natural sciences is preferred. Candidates should have practical familiarity with boats and prior experience on open water. Partial high school education is acceptable, though a high school diploma or GED is preferred.
Skills and behavioral expectations
This position calls for strong customer service, a people-focused approach, and confident communication and public speaking. A good work ethic, teamwork, and an interest in educating varied audiences about wildlife are essential. The role also requires following the company dress code and being available on Saturdays, Sundays, evenings, and holidays.
Other requirements
- Valid driver’s license.
- Completion of the Florida Boaters Safety Course.
- Participation in pre-employment and/or random drug testing.
- Ability to read and write job-related documents in English.
- Clear spoken English and the ability to understand customers and coworkers.
- Physical presence at the work location is required.
- The job involves frequent walking, bending, lifting, carrying, and reaching, including overhead movement in a changing environment.
