Data Center Technician

Role overview

Microsoft is looking for a Data Center Technician to support the setup, deployment, troubleshooting, and retirement of hardware inside its cloud infrastructure. In this role, you will work with standard operating procedures to stage equipment, carry out diagnostics, replace defective parts, and complete simple hardware decommissions and refresh activities. The position also offers the chance to grow your technical expertise, strengthen mentoring abilities, and build familiarity with security and data handling practices.

This role sits within Microsoft Cloud Operations & Innovation (CO+I), the organization that runs the infrastructure behind services such as Bing, Office 365, Xbox, OneDrive, and Microsoft Azure. What you will do

• Investigate hardware problems using standard troubleshooting methods, identify the root cause quickly, and replace faulty parts while keeping disruption to customers and business operations low.
• Carry out post-work quality checks and confirm that grounding, staging, labeling, and cabling meet safety rules, deployment standards, and planned network design tasks.
• Remove and retire hardware for straightforward changes and refreshes, such as memory upgrades and rebuilds, with limited supervision.
• Report, communicate, and escalate incidents through the correct Microsoft data center operations channels, including management, technician leads, and engineering specialists.
• Support other technicians by sharing guidance when tasks are complex or difficult.
• Complete the training required for the role and learn through observation and hands-on exposure with experienced technicians.
• Contribute to a collaborative team culture by sharing knowledge, participating in team meetings, asking questions, and staying informed about team progress.
• Take ownership of service quality, completeness, user experience, and the condition of data center facilities.
• Represent Microsoft’s culture and core values in day-to-day work.

Requirements

• High school diploma or an equivalent qualification.
• Basic knowledge of computer hardware and components.
• Experience supporting IT equipment or similar technology.
• Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements.
• Willingness to complete the Microsoft Cloud Background Check on hire/transfer and every two years afterward.
• Preferred: prior experience supporting IT equipment or related technology.
• Preferred certifications such as CompTIA A+, Server+, Network+, or Basic Structure Cabling (BSC).
