Role overview
This opportunity is for an Associate to join a specialist strategy and advisory practice in Melbourne that works across energy, resources, and industrials. The role sits on client delivery for enterprise strategy, operating model, and commercial advisory work, supporting senior leaders as they respond to the energy transition across areas such as electricity distribution, upstream gas, generation, and decarbonisation.
The team is intentionally lean and senior-led, so the Associate is expected to take real ownership from the outset and work directly with executive-level stakeholders. The environment combines strong output standards with close mentoring from principals who have trained at major strategy firms. It is designed for someone seeking rapid development in a setting that avoids the usual expectation of consistently long hours beyond what the work truly requires.
What you'll do
- Help deliver strategy, operating model, and commercial advisory projects for clients in the energy sector.
- Carry out both numerical and non-numerical analysis to support strategic recommendations.
- Tackle ambiguous, complex issues with limited oversight while maintaining strong personal accountability.
- Build and present materials directly to senior stakeholders, including C-suite leaders.
- Support research, market scanning, and structured problem solving across multiple workstreams.
- Contribute effectively in small teams where individual effort has a clear impact on the client outcome.
Experience and qualifications
- Between 1 and 4 years of strategy consulting experience, ideally from an MBB firm or a respected boutique with similarly high standards for analysis and delivery.
- Strong ability to solve quantitative problems quickly and accurately, including handling complex datasets and building structured analyses.
- Evidence of initiative and ownership, such as early promotion or exposure to senior stakeholders earlier than usual.
- Interest or experience in energy, resources, or industrials, including electricity markets, energy transition, upstream gas, or adjacent areas.
- Confidence in client-facing discussions and presenting to senior decision-makers.
- Bachelor’s degree with a strong academic record; first-class honours or equivalent is preferred.
- Postgraduate study such as a Master’s degree or MBA is considered an advantage, but it is not mandatory.
- Backgrounds in engineering, economics, commerce, or a related discipline are especially useful.
