Role Overview
This position focuses on reviewing clinical records and related paperwork, then converting the documented information into diagnosis and procedure codes using the applicable clinical coding standards. The role is based in Abu Dhabi and is designed for someone who can work accurately with medical documentation and coding rules.
Key Responsibilities
- Review patient records and apply the correct codes for diagnoses, treatments, and procedures across outpatient, emergency, and observation short-stay cases.
- Study provider notes to identify the main diagnosis, comorbidities, complications, secondary conditions, and any surgical procedures.
- Code strictly according to official guidelines while ensuring the record is complete and accurately supported by documentation.
- Use the query process to resolve unclear diagnosis or procedure details and improve coding accuracy.
- Apply the Present on Admission status to inpatient diagnoses where required.
- Verify that the correct physician name is linked to each service, along with the right date and time.
- Coordinate with physicians and other stakeholders whenever more information is needed, including situations that could affect medical necessity denials.
- Check and, if needed, correct patient discharge disposition details in the documentation.
- Consistently meet the expected productivity and coding accuracy targets.
- Manage workload effectively so coding is completed within regulatory timelines.
- Work with physicians during the coding query process and provide training when required.
- Follow AHIMA ethical coding standards and all official coding rules.
Accountabilities
- Ensure coding is assigned accurately, sequenced correctly, and aligned with government and insurance requirements.
Experience Required
The role calls for at least 3 years of progressively responsible experience in a similar clinical coding position. Experience in a large healthcare facility is preferred.
Education
A bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management or a related discipline is required. A diploma is also acceptable if supported by 3 additional years of healthcare experience.
