About the role

The Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Otago is hiring a Sterilising Technician/Assistant to join its Sterilising Services team in Dunedin. This role sits within a supportive, professional clinical services environment that contributes directly to both patient care and student learning.

What you will do

You will work in a busy and important department responsible for processing dental instruments and equipment used in the Dental School’s clinical and teaching activities. The work includes decontaminating, inspecting, assembling, sterilising, and distributing instruments and equipment while maintaining very high standards of safety and infection prevention.

In this position, you will collaborate closely with clinical and academic staff to help ensure that all instruments are handled and processed accurately, efficiently, and in line with required quality standards.

What we are looking for

The University is ideally seeking someone with sterilising technician experience, but applications are also welcome from people who want to build a career in sterilising services.

The ideal candidate will be detail-focused, reliable, organised, and comfortable working in a fast-moving team environment. You should communicate well, stay positive, be willing to learn, and follow procedures carefully to support infection prevention and control. Basic confidence with computers and digital systems is also needed.

Desirable background

While not essential, it would be an advantage to have prior experience in a sterilising services setting, a qualification in Sterilising Technology, or an understanding of sterilisation and infection prevention standards.

This is a permanent, full-time role of 37.5 hours per week, scheduled across the academic year only (44 weeks), and based in Ōtepoti, Dunedin.

The salary range for a sterilising technician is NZD 63,508 to NZD 68,185, with a top rate of NZD 73,640. The salary range for a sterilising assistant is NZD 59,494 to NZD 63,000, with a top rate of NZD 68,847.
