About Airways
Airways manages New Zealand’s 30 million square kilometres of airspace and delivers air traffic control, surveillance, communications, flight inspection, mapping, and airspace design services. The organisation works closely with government bodies, regulators, airlines, airports, and the general aviation community to help ensure pilots, passengers, and cargo reach their destinations safely. Its work is guided by the core values of Safety, One Airways, Excellence, and Success.
The business is structured around operational groups supported by governance and corporate services. The Delivery function sits within the Technology Group and plays an important role in planning and delivering programmes and projects that support Airways’ strategic objectives.
About the Team
The Delivery team is responsible for effective planning and delivery across programmes and projects, and works with technology and business leaders to realise strategic benefits. The team supports governance, portfolio management practices, mentoring, reporting, tools, and standardised processes across project, programme, and portfolio activities.
About the Projects
At any point in time, the organisation is managing more than one hundred projects across engineering and infrastructure, electrical and power, networks, enterprise systems, and property. The environment is highly complex and includes more than 20 in-house systems, hardware design/build/install/maintenance across 90+ NavAid sites, network design and implementation, IT services, and building construction and maintenance.
About the Role
This is a newly created permanent full-time role for a Project Delivery Manager, based in either Auckland or Christchurch. Reporting to the Head of Portfolio Delivery, you will lead and guide a team of Project and Programme Managers while overseeing successful delivery across defined organisational portfolios from initiation to closure. The aim is to ensure projects are completed on schedule, within budget, and deliver the intended benefits.
Key Responsibilities
- Take ownership of end-to-end delivery for assigned projects by supporting direct reports and working with key stakeholders to identify, manage, and resolve issues affecting the Capital Plan.
- Lead the development of clear, consistent, and complete business cases that satisfy financial and operational viability requirements.
- Monitor quality and performance, maintain strong reporting standards, and ensure compliance with governance and process frameworks.
- Build deep understanding of the scope within assigned portfolios to support prioritisation and ongoing improvement.
- Apply proactive risk management by identifying, assessing, and reducing potential risks early.
About You
You should be an experienced people leader with strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills developed in a project delivery setting. Success in this role also requires confidence operating in a regulated environment and the ability to influence, collaborate, and drive outcomes across internal and external stakeholders.
Experience and Requirements
- At least 5 years of industry experience in sectors such as engineering, IT, or construction, with responsibility for leading delivery teams in a highly regulated and controlled environment.
- A relevant tertiary qualification in project management and delivery, or equivalent industry experience.
- Professional capability in Portfolio, Programme, and Project Management (P3M3) or Project Portfolio Management (PPM).
- PMP certification or a comparable professional project management credential.
- Strong working knowledge of project management methodologies, models, and tools such as Sentient, Project Server/Project Online, Planview, Microsoft pmo365, and ServiceNow.
- Experience managing budgets, including creating, agreeing, and controlling them.
- Ability to adapt to a dynamic business environment, demonstrate resilience and agility, take ownership, and focus on delivering strong business outcomes.
Application and Other Information
The successful candidate must be legally eligible to work in New Zealand. Employment is subject to pre-employment checks, which may include reference checks, drug and alcohol screening, and a criminal conviction check.
