Description de l'emploi
Role overview
This opening is restricted to current employees of the Maryland State Archives. The position is based at 350 Rowe Boulevard, Annapolis, MD 21401 and is graded as Grade 14.
What you will do
You will carry out day-to-day digitization work for materials handled at the Annapolis facility, with a strong emphasis on scanning patron requests and paid agency requests. You will work with the Director to identify the most effective approach for each digitization assignment and use a range of scanning and editing tools to produce images for delivery or for upload into the permanent electronic repository. This role supports the agency’s mission of improving public access to state records while also helping preserve records through digitization.
You may also join digitization discussions with outside organizations, help clarify project needs, and provide leadership to contractual staff, DSCI staff, and/or interns on specific digitization efforts.
Core duties
- Operate digitization equipment to scan media in line with department procedures.
- Look after the scanning equipment you use and help ensure it remains in proper working order.
- Edit and rename image files using a variety of software tools so they are ready for patrons or for the permanent electronic repository.
- Share project progress updates with your supervisor on a regular and timely basis.
- Review completed scanning work and update Servicewise tickets accordingly.
- Take the lead on scanning projects completed at the Annapolis facility.
- Prepare images for oversized printing using commercial printing equipment.
- Participate in meetings with outside organizations to gather the information needed for time and cost estimates.
Minimum qualifications
You must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency certificate, along with six years of professional archival experience working with public records.
Substitution options
- A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university plus two years of professional archival experience may replace the required experience.
- Academic credit from an accredited college or university may be substituted at a rate of 30 credit hours for each year of required experience.
- Two years in the Archival Assistant series may substitute for the education requirement and cover up to four years of the required experience.
- U.S. Armed Forces service as a commissioned officer in Archivist classifications or Archivist specialty codes in the Library and Archives field may be accepted on a year-for-year basis for the experience requirement.
Preferred background
- Three years of production-level digitization experience.
- Two years of experience using Photoshop.
Special requirements
This role may involve lifting up to 50 pounds when record shipments arrive and climbing ladders. Because of the need to retrieve and return heavy volumes from library shelves, careful handling is essential, especially when library ladders are in use. Work may include a rotating shift and Saturdays.
Selection process
Applicants must include enough detail in their application to show they meet the posted qualifications, and all qualification details must be submitted by the closing date. Information submitted after the deadline will not be considered. Candidates who qualify will be ranked as Best Qualified, Better Qualified, or Qualified and placed on the eligible list for at least one year.
Benefits
State of Maryland benefits are provided.
Application instructions
Online submission is strongly encouraged. If needed, a paper application and supplemental questionnaire may be sent to the Department of Budget and Management, Recruitment and Examination Division, 301 W. Preston St., Baltimore, MD 21201.
