Senior Rotating Machinery Engineer

Role overview

This position carries primary responsibility for maintaining and supporting rotating equipment across the plant, with a focus on steam turbines, gas turbines, centrifugal and reciprocating compressors, and pumps. The role is centered on reliable day-to-day upkeep, planned maintenance delivery, and ensuring jobs are executed according to sound engineering practices.

The engineer is expected to lead corrective, preventive, and predictive maintenance efforts, with close attention to safety, quality, and turnaround time. A key part of the role is reducing the duration of unplanned shutdowns and completing maintenance work efficiently.

The position also includes identifying equipment obsolescence, keeping assets technically current, supporting management of change and project-related activities, contributing to improvement initiatives and root cause analysis, and ensuring that all work complies with the company’s occupational health, quality, safety, energy, and environmental requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Plan, execute, and track periodic, preventive, and corrective maintenance for rotating machinery in the assigned area.
• Carry out condition monitoring activities such as vibration analysis, performance trending, and other predictive techniques to detect deterioration early.
• Perform oil and lubricant analysis for rotating equipment to evaluate lubricant condition, identify wear patterns, and recommend preventive measures.
• Apply relevant API standards for rotating equipment, especially those covering compressors and steam turbines, to ensure compliance during maintenance, troubleshooting, and reliability reviews.
• Review and challenge repair proposals and work scopes for steam turbines, compressors, and gas turbine components, with understanding of repair methods and practices.
• Investigate recurring failures, propose corrective actions, and contribute to root cause analysis studies when needed.
• Identify obsolescence issues, recommend remedial measures, and resolve bad actors in coordination with OEMs.
• Supervise supervisors working across different disciplines and areas to ensure rotating equipment and related systems remain in optimal operating condition and maintenance meets quality standards.
• Coordinate with turnaround and production teams to define work scopes, provide technical input for work packs, and support field execution during turnaround activities when required.
• Contribute to maintenance plans and budgets, including OPEX, shutdown, and capital spares, while monitoring costs and supporting cost control.
• Work with planning engineers and end users to ensure the timely availability of spares and materials for scheduled maintenance work.
• Support updates to item masters in ERP, including item specifications, bills of material, and new item codes.
• Use SAP effectively for work orders, notifications, material reservations, and maintenance history tracking.
• Coordinate with supply chain and contractors for procurement or refurbishment of capital spares and maintain records for critical spares.
• Ensure turnaround work orders for plant improvements are executed through the management of change process.
• Take part in project modification proposals related to the area of responsibility and provide maintenance-based feedback.
• Develop and maintain procedures and instructions for management systems covering occupational health, safety, environment, energy, and quality.
• Identify and register safety risks and environmental aspects linked to maintenance activities.
• Participate in studies, investigations, and improvement projects related to plants, products, systems, and equipment.
• Help develop national employees into direct roles and support their on-the-job development plans.
• Participate in call duty and provide standby support outside regular working hours to assist plant operations.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.
• At least 8 years of direct, relevant experience in a similar role, ideally in fertilizer, petrochemical, or oil and gas environments.
• Hands-on experience with performance monitoring, preventive maintenance, repair, overhaul, and troubleshooting of rotating equipment and associated auxiliaries.
• Strong practical knowledge of steam turbines, gas turbines, centrifugal and reciprocating compressors, and pumps.
• Ability to review repair plans and identify suitable repair approaches for rotating machinery components.
• Working knowledge of API standards relevant to rotating equipment, particularly API 613, API 617, API 618, and API 612.
• Condition monitoring certification such as ISO CAT I/II/III/IV, American Institute, or Mobius Institute is preferred.
• Oil analysis certification such as ICML MLA/MLT I/II/III is preferred.
