Role Overview
The City of Edinburg is hiring a Library Assistant I to help keep library services running smoothly and to support librarians with the upkeep of library and audiovisual collections. This role is a strong fit for someone who enjoys public service, organized work, and being part of a growing municipal team in Edinburg, Texas.
Compensation and Benefits
This position offers pay of $13.38 per hour. What You Will Do
In this position, you will support a welcoming library atmosphere by helping patrons, maintaining records, handling materials, and assisting with events and outreach activities. The role blends customer service, clerical work, collection maintenance, and coordination support.
Collection and Patron Support
- Register borrowers and issue library cards.
- Maintain records for new library members.
- Help patrons locate information from library and archival resources.
- Provide support in the café shop operations as needed.
Events and Administrative Support
- Assist with planning and coordinating cultural programs and library events.
- Help prepare press releases and event/program setup.
- Support other divisions within the department when needed.
Materials Processing and Maintenance
- Catalog and process new and donated library items.
- Repair books, DVDs, and audiobooks.
- Remove damaged or outdated materials from circulation.
Requirements
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent is required.
- An associate degree is preferred.
- No prior work experience is required.
- Intermediate computer skills in a Microsoft Windows environment are required, including Excel, Word, Publisher, database management, and record keeping.
- Working knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System is required.
- Bilingual ability in English and Spanish is required.
- A valid Texas Department of Public Safety Class C driver’s license is required.
- Strong oral and written communication skills are important.
- Attention to detail, dependability, teamwork, and a hands-on work style are valued.
Eligibility
Applicants must be able to meet the education, language, computer, and licensing requirements listed for the role. Candidates should also be prepared to complete a background investigation and pass a pre-employment drug test at the city’s expense.
