Role summary

We are looking for an experienced Emerging Markets FX Trader with strong knowledge of African currencies to join a global trading and liquidity organization. The position calls for hands-on expertise in less liquid and restricted FX markets, including OTC and interbank execution, along with the ability to build practical hedging and liquidity setups that can handle heavy cross-border payment activity. In addition to trading skills, this role also needs someone who can help shape FX infrastructure such as trading systems, hedging automation, and liquidity connectivity with banks, brokers, and OTC counterparties.

Key responsibilities

  • Handle proprietary and flow-based FX positions across emerging market currencies, especially African pairs such as NGN, KES, ZAR, and GHS.
  • Develop and preserve strong liquidity relationships with banks, brokers, and OTC desks in relevant markets.
  • Trade spot, forwards, NDFs, swaps, and OTC instruments to improve execution quality and manage currency exposure.
  • Track market shifts, capital restrictions, and liquidity conditions across emerging market FX environments.
  • Create and apply hedging approaches to manage corporate or client-linked FX exposure.
  • Improve hedging performance across multiple liquidity sources, including banks, ECNs, OTC desks, and, where useful, crypto liquidity pools.
  • Build models for adaptive hedging, inventory risk control, and spread management.
  • Keep a close watch on risk limits, profit and loss, and exposure across currency books.
  • Partner with engineering and product teams to improve FX trading and hedging infrastructure.
  • Contribute to automated hedging systems, liquidity aggregation tools, smart order routing, and pricing/risk applications.
  • Connect banks, ECNs, and liquidity providers through APIs or FIX-based integrations.
  • Support better execution automation, lower latency, and real-time exposure visibility.
  • Identify, evaluate, and onboard new liquidity providers and OTC partners across emerging markets.
  • Help develop pricing methods for illiquid currency pairs and assist with new corridor launches.
  • Support the creation of scalable FX infrastructure for global payments and settlement flows.

Experience and technical expectations

  • Bring 5 to 10+ years of FX trading experience in emerging markets.
  • Have substantial experience trading African currencies such as NGN, KES, ZAR, GHS, and EGP.
  • Have worked in global banks, EM FX trading firms, payment or fintech companies, or crypto exchanges/market makers.
  • Demonstrate proven ability to execute OTC and institutional-sized FX transactions.
  • Understand FX market microstructure in illiquid markets.
  • Know NDF markets and offshore hedging approaches well.
  • Be familiar with capital controls and FX regulatory frameworks.
  • Have practical experience improving or building FX trading systems, hedging engines, and liquidity aggregation platforms.
  • Be comfortable with FIX connectivity, API-based trading systems, and algorithmic execution.

Additional skills and working style

  • Use strong quantitative and analytical judgment in day-to-day trading decisions.
  • Operate effectively in volatile, fragmented liquidity environments.
  • Maintain a solid network within EM FX liquidity providers and OTC trading desks.
  • Communicate clearly and collaborate well across functions.
  • Bring experience supporting high-volume cross-border payment flows or treasury operations, where available.
  • Be comfortable trading EM FX through both traditional banks and alternative liquidity sources.
  • Have exposure to stablecoin or crypto liquidity markets in emerging economies, where applicable.
  • Contribute experience in building or scaling FX market-making operations.
  • Work well across global teams and in fast-moving environments.
