Role overview
Right Traffic is hiring an Estimator in Halifax, Nova Scotia for a full-time on-site position. The role is focused on turning bid opportunities into accurate, timely, and competitive estimates that support proposal success and customer satisfaction.
This position calls for a mix of analytical ability, technical knowledge, and confident communication. You will work with teams across the business, keep cost information up to date, and help identify practical, cost-efficient construction approaches that strengthen proposals in the traffic control sector.
What you will do
- Examine bid packages and determine which opportunities are a strong fit.
- Shape bid and proposal strategies that emphasize the organization’s strengths and competitive edge.
- Build precise and complete cost estimates and submit them within required bid deadlines.
- Check estimates and updates for accuracy, completeness, and consistency with the project scope.
- Coordinate with the General Manager and other stakeholders to support planning and execution.
- Track and record the movement of project information between internal teams and outside parties.
- Develop conceptual budgets from design concepts and owner-supplied information.
- Assess alternative techniques and materials to uncover savings opportunities.
- Foster productive working relationships with internal departments and external customers.
- Create and maintain a detailed cost database covering labor, equipment, production rates, and installation approaches.
- Improve estimating workflows, standards, and procedures to support consistency and quality.
- Produce clear reports and supporting documentation for estimating and business development.
What you need
- Background in preparing budgets and handling financial planning at a departmental level.
- Experience estimating for DOT-related work.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and at least one professional estimating software tool.
- Ability to read and interpret civil, construction, and traffic control drawings and specifications.
- Design-build project experience is an advantage.
- Strong organization and time management skills with the ability to juggle several priorities.
- Comfort working both independently and in team settings.
- Strong strategic thinking, problem-solving ability, and attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Capability to spot inconsistencies and resolve issues in project documents and plans.
Experience preference
A minimum of 3 years of estimating experience in traffic control or a closely related field is preferred. Hands-on experience with state DOT bidding is strongly preferred.
