About Z Energy NZ

Z is driven by a clear mission: powering better journeys now and into the future. As one of New Zealand’s major transport energy businesses, it is committed to providing transport energy that is safe, dependable, and secure, while also creating new energy solutions for a changing world.

The company is part of the Ampol Group, an independent trans-Tasman energy organisation with trading operations around the world. Together, the group has the scale and reach to support customers, communities, and employees across borders.

The Data, Analytics & AI team uses analytics and artificial intelligence to create insights, improve decision-making, strengthen operations, and support growth through innovation.

About the role

As a Data Engineer in Wellington, you will help improve customer experience by solving meaningful data challenges across the business. This is a hands-on role where you will design, build, and support scalable data pipelines using modern technologies. You will work closely with data engineers, analysts, scientists, and business stakeholders to convert large volumes of raw data into usable business insight.

The role calls for someone who can take ownership of work end to end, apply technical depth, and contribute strongly within a skilled data team. It is also an opportunity to support Z’s wider goal of helping move toward a lower-carbon future.

What you will do

  • Create and enhance complex data models that support reporting and analysis.
  • Build systems that can store and process data efficiently, with a strong focus on modelling quality.
  • Improve the speed, scale, and usability of existing BI models, data engineering workflows, and related tools.
  • Look for opportunities to advance internal BI engineering practices by exploring emerging technologies and industry developments.
  • Work with stakeholders to clarify needs for reporting, analytics, and data engineering solutions.

What you should bring

  • Solid background in data engineering, especially with tools such as Databricks, Azure Data Factory, and Microsoft Fabric.
  • Strong working knowledge of Python, SQL, ETL processes, and cloud-based technologies.
  • Experience using GitHub and CI/CD workflows.
  • Ability to interpret business needs and turn them into practical data models that support decision-making.
  • Capability to lead and guide junior engineers while influencing stakeholders and encouraging teamwork.
  • Good understanding of database design and SQL databases.
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative working style.
  • A proactive, analytical mindset and enthusiasm for contributing to Z’s values and long-term goals.

Pay and benefits

The base pay for this position is between NZD 120,000 and NZD 150,000 per year. In addition, the package includes a 15% short-term incentive based on company performance, a 5% KiwiSaver employer contribution, and Southern Cross health insurance.

  • Competitive total rewards package, including short-term incentives.
  • Health insurance for you and your family.
  • Enhanced employer KiwiSaver contribution.
  • Extra leave options, including additional sick leave, parental leave support, and the ability to purchase extra leave.
  • Flexible hybrid working, with time split between home and the office.
  • Supportive team environment with opportunities to contribute meaningfully.
  • Learning from experienced specialists, plus access to training and career development across the organisation.
  • Two paid days each year to support volunteering in your community through the company’s giving initiative.

Why join Z

Z is a proud Kiwi company with strong ambitions for the future and a deep commitment to customers, communities, and people. The organisation focuses on outcomes by giving people the right context to succeed, rather than micromanaging how work is done.

The workplace is shaped by flexible working, strong company values, and inclusive recognition such as Rainbow Tick and Gender Tick accreditation. Z places a strong emphasis on diversity and inclusion, and believes that a diverse workforce helps people be themselves and do their best work.

If the role sounds like a good match for your skills and values, you are encouraged to apply.

Application details

Please include a cover letter explaining why you are a strong fit for the role. Applications close on Friday, June 12th. Shortlisting may begin before the closing date, and the role may be removed early if suitable candidates are found.
