Job overview

The custodian is accountable for keeping assigned spaces clean, sanitary, and well maintained. This role supports daily facility upkeep through routine janitorial work, safe handling of waste, and consistent adherence to workplace procedures and safety standards.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out general janitorial tasks and follow the day’s assigned cleaning plan.
• Manage hazardous waste duties, including collecting, sorting, classifying, storing, labeling, shipping, receiving, cleaning, recycling, and packaging special or hazardous materials.
• Use motorized cleaning equipment as needed.
• Maintain the cleanliness and day-to-day condition of the assigned area.
• Escalate incidents, unsafe situations, and hazardous conditions to a supervisor.
• Follow all safety requirements, policies, procedures, and rules.
• Stop unsafe actions when observed in others or in yourself.
• Work collaboratively with team members and help wherever support is needed.
• Complete repetitive tasks while maintaining quality and consistency.
• Keep the work area orderly and clean.
• Follow company protocols, procedures, and instructions.
• Accept direction from supervisors and respond appropriately.
• Communicate professionally with leads, supervisors, coworkers, managers, and customers.
• Step in during staff shortages when required.
• Support the shift lead in closing out punch-list items.
• Use the required personal protective equipment correctly.
• Maintain a professional appearance and workplace behavior.
• Understand the importance of customer service and customer satisfaction.
• Work with reporting systems and maintain awareness of environmental requirements.

Requirements

• No formal education is required for this position.
• Approximately 3 to 6 months of training or relevant experience is preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• A valid driver’s license may be needed.
• Completion of all safety and task-related training certifications is required.
• Forklift certification may be required.
• Ability to read and interpret instructions, procedures, manuals, and related documents.
• Strong spoken and written communication skills.
• Working knowledge of cleaning methods and equipment, with willingness to share knowledge with the team.
• Understanding of cleaning equipment care and maintenance.
• Knowledge of cleaning compounds and chemicals and their safe, efficient use.
• Bilingual ability is an advantage.
• No supervisory responsibilities are associated with this role.

Physical demands and work environment

This role may require sitting, speaking, and listening for portions of the shift, and the employee must be able to lift or move up to 35 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be available for qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Compensation and schedule

The shift runs Monday through Friday from 2:00 pm to 10:30 pm. Pay is $22.50 to $23.50 per hour.
