About Asteron Life

Asteron Life has been supporting people in New Zealand for close to 150 years. The business helps customers protect what matters most through a range of personal, business, and employee insurance solutions. It works alongside financial advisers who match customers with suitable cover, and with strategic partners who provide tools and guidance so people can better understand their insurance needs.

The company values varied backgrounds and perspectives, and aims to maintain an inclusive, collaborative, and flexible workplace that supports growth and recognises contribution.

The opportunity

Asteron Life is hiring a Disability Case Manager to join its Claims team in Wellington. In this role, you will take ownership of a portfolio of disability claims from start to finish. You will assess liability, review policy terms, and reach fair and timely decisions that align with the organisation’s claims philosophy.

You will examine medical, financial, and occupational information to handle claims accurately while balancing customer support with practical commercial judgement. The role also involves guiding claimants with empathy, setting expectations clearly, and supporting recovery and return-to-work planning.

This position suits an experienced disability claims professional who enjoys relationship building, clear communication, and making well-informed decisions in a fast-moving environment. You will also support team capability by sharing knowledge, assisting junior case managers, and helping improve claims processes and service quality.

Key responsibilities

  • Handle a full portfolio of disability claims from initiation through resolution, ensuring decisions are fair, accurate, and timely.
  • Develop trusted relationships with claimants by communicating with empathy and providing consistent support throughout the claim journey.
  • Support better customer outcomes by creating and actively managing recovery and return-to-work plans.
  • Review medical, financial, and occupational details to determine liability, claim duration, and claim value.
  • Monitor claims on an ongoing basis, spotting risks and opportunities and responding decisively to improve outcomes.
  • Work with medical professionals, rehabilitation providers, and advisers to strengthen case management outcomes.
  • Operate within legal, regulatory, privacy, and insurance obligations.
  • Contribute to team performance by sharing expertise, mentoring junior colleagues, and building overall capability.
  • Improve the claims experience through insightful analysis, process enhancement, and customer-focused service delivery.

About you

To succeed in this role, you should bring hands-on experience in disability case management and a strong understanding of end-to-end claims administration. You’ll need confidence working with medical terminology, financial assessments, and policy wording, as well as the ability to assess complex information and make balanced decisions based on evidence.

You should be a strong communicator who can build rapport and explain information clearly to a range of stakeholders. A customer-first approach, empathy, professionalism, and strong organisation are essential, especially when managing multiple claims and competing priorities.

You will also need working knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements, including privacy and insurance legislation, along with a proactive, solutions-oriented mindset and a collaborative approach to supporting others.

Benefits

  • Flexible working environment.
  • Career development pathways, including local and global mobility opportunities.
  • Access to leading learning platforms and professional development support.
  • Medical plan and wellbeing programmes.
  • Life, income protection, and trauma insurance cover.

Accessibility and checks

Before starting, you must be able to provide two references, evidence of full working rights, and complete police and credit checks through an online provider. As an equal opportunity employer committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce, support for accessibility needs can be arranged during the interview process. Candidates may contact the Talent Team directly for assistance.
