About the training path
Managers in Training learn the day-to-day responsibilities involved in operating a Tom Thumb convenience store. The program includes time with both a Training Manager and a Supervising Manager across different shifts so they can learn the business, the team structure, vendor interactions, and customer service standards.
During formal training weeks, you will shadow experienced leaders and absorb practical store-management methods. In the weeks between training, you will work side by side with the team on varied shifts to apply what you have learned in real situations. Once training is complete, you will join the bench leadership group and help cover stores when needed until you are assigned to a location.
Key responsibilities
- Welcome guests warmly and help maintain the service standards the store is known for.
- Support the Store Manager in hiring, training, scheduling, and coaching team members.
- Help set goals, track progress, and keep the team accountable through clear communication.
- Keep shelves stocked by monitoring inventory, rotating product, and maintaining full sales-floor presentation.
- Oversee merchandising, quality checks, and food-safety routines in stores that serve hot food.
- Work with the team to keep the store clean and presentable inside and outside, including the coffee area, food-service section, and restrooms.
- Operate the cash register efficiently and accurately.
- Assist with additional food-service, safety, and store duties as directed by management.
- Be available to contribute during all store hours, including weekends and holidays.
Experience and education needed
A high school diploma or GED is required. You should have at least 1 year of experience in retail or food service. Prior leadership experience in retail, guest service, or restaurant environments is preferred. ServSafe or food-safety certification is a plus, but it is not mandatory.
Work schedule and conditions
This is a full-time position with varied day and night shifts, depending on store operating hours. Some locations may operate 24 hours a day. Weekend and holiday availability is required.
The role is expected to follow a 40-hour regular workweek, with 5 hours of overtime required. Travel is about 5%, and in locations where applicable, you must be able to deliver bank deposits independently and have your own vehicle for that purpose.
Physical and workplace requirements
You should be able to move around the store throughout the day, stand and walk for up to 8 hours, and handle physical tasks such as reaching, bending, squatting, twisting, grasping, and working in cooler temperatures. The work environment is usually moderately noisy.
Physical lifting requirements include handling up to 10 pounds regularly, up to 25 pounds frequently, and up to 40 pounds occasionally.
Additional notes
Specialized food-service attire is required, and items such as hats, visors, and gloves are provided.
The company values diverse backgrounds and perspectives and encourages candidates whose experience and style can add something new to the team.
The organization also highlights growth potential through its broader network of locations, which offers opportunities for advancement.
