Role overview
As a Judges' Clerk, you will support District Court Judges and Community Magistrates with in-depth legal research and analysis. The position is focused on helping judges resolve legal questions effectively while also assisting the smooth day-to-day functioning of New Zealand's courts.
Key duties
- Carry out detailed legal research and prepare briefing notes for judges.
- Review and interpret legislation, case law, and new developments in the legal landscape.
- Prepare explanatory memoranda and research documents.
- Locate and compile judgments, statutes, and legal commentary.
- Assist with judicial education programmes and seminars.
- Work alongside Judges' Clerks across the country to provide prompt support to the judiciary.
What you need to succeed
The ideal applicant will hold an LLB with strong academic results. You should be confident in legal research and analysis, able to write clearly and accurately, and comfortable balancing multiple priorities without compromising quality. An understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and how it relates to the justice system is also important.

Salary and appointment
The salary range for this role is NZ$69,845 to NZ$84,135, with the final offer depending on skills and experience.
