Position overview

This full-time Instructional Designer role reports to the Executive Director of Online Learning & Teaching Innovation. The position is part of the Online Learning team and focuses on helping faculty build strong online, virtual, and hybrid courses. It supports the Office of Online Learning by improving course design, accessibility, assessment strategies, multimedia use, and faculty development around pedagogy and learning technologies.

Core duties

  • Work from the assigned campus or designated work location.
  • Create and lead workshops, training resources, and individual consultations that help faculty use instructional methods, technologies, and systems effectively for online, virtual, hybrid, CBE, and web-enhanced courses and programs.
  • Review courses for alignment with departmental and accreditation expectations, institutional quality standards, and accessibility requirements such as ADA compliance.
  • Train faculty on approved learning tools, instructional design approaches, online teaching practices, and the learning management system (D2L Brightspace).
  • Coordinate communication and workload accurately while using strong organization, time management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Apply accessibility tools and methods for online learning and support faculty in meeting accessibility standards, including ADA and Section 508 requirements.
  • Build productive working relationships with faculty and department leaders in support of the Office of Online Learning.
  • Adapt quickly to new processes, procedures, software, and departmental needs.
  • Proofread, revise, and produce clear written materials and multimedia presentations.

Required qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design, Education, Educational Technology, Curriculum and Instruction, or a closely related discipline.
  • At least 1 year of professional experience in a related area such as instructional design, online learning, e-learning, instructional technology, or training design and facilitation.

Preferred experience

  • Experience using a learning management system in an administrative capacity, especially D2L/Brightspace.
  • Background in multimedia production or editing, or experience with web design/HTML.
  • Prior work in higher education course design or college-level teaching, ideally in online, virtual, CBE, or hybrid formats.
  • Experience building, reviewing, and improving courses using Quality Matters, OSCQR, or similar quality-review standards.

Knowledge and skills

  • Ability to use MS Office, multimedia tools, learning management systems, Zoom, Teams, video editing software, proctoring platforms, accessibility tools, and plagiarism/AI detection tools.
  • Understanding of adult learning principles, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), instructional design models, and learning theories.
  • Knowledge of course and curriculum mapping, assignment design, rubric development, and formative and summative assessment.
  • Ability to identify and apply emerging trends and technologies that influence online learning in higher education.
  • Comfort with learning and teaching new tools, including AI prompt-building for AI-supported learning communities and engagement strategies.
  • Experience with accessibility review standards, including WCAG 2.1 AA.
  • Strong project management, independent work habits, teamwork, communication, presentation, prioritization, multitasking, and decision-making skills.
