Role overview
This freelance part-time opportunity is for a bot developer working on a Tendem project in a hybrid AI + human setup. The work focuses on creating and improving conversational bots and messaging integrations for channels such as WhatsApp, Telegram, and Discord. In this position, you will act as an AI Pilot: Tendem Agents handle repetitive work, while you contribute engineering expertise, conversation flow design, and quality assurance so the bots are dependable and fit for real users.
The platform connects domain specialists with AI initiatives from leading technology companies. Its goal is to help unlock the value of generative AI by bringing in practical expertise from around the world.
The role is suited to professionals who already have practical experience building messaging bots, using platform APIs and webhooks, and shaping conversational logic for production use.
What you will do
- Create bots for WhatsApp Business API / Cloud API, Telegram Bot API, Discord API, and related messaging channels.
- Plan and implement conversation journeys, including dialogue state management and fallback behavior.
- Connect bots with LLM services such as OpenAI, Anthropic, or similar tools when natural language responses are needed.
- Link bots to backend systems, databases, CRMs, and external services such as booking tools, payment systems, and content providers.
- Work with webhooks, rate limits, and platform-specific formats such as interactive messages, buttons, media, and templates.
- Review AI-produced bot code and improve it for correctness, stability, and robust error handling.
- Set up logging, monitoring, and recovery mechanisms to keep bots functioning reliably in production.
Experience and technical background
Applicants should bring a strong base in bot engineering, messaging-platform integrations, and dependable conversational workflows. The ideal person can build and support production-ready bots, work comfortably with APIs, webhooks, and backend services, and turn AI-assisted output into reliable, user-friendly solutions. Good problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and the capacity to work independently are important.
- Minimum 3 years of relevant experience in backend work, integrations, automation, or bot development.
- At least 1 year of practical experience creating bots for major messaging platforms such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord, Slack, or similar.
- Strong programming skills in Python or Node.js for bot backend logic.
- Hands-on experience with REST APIs, webhooks, OAuth, and asynchronous request handling.
- Experience working with relational or NoSQL databases to store conversation state and user information.
- Familiarity with LLM APIs such as OpenAI or Anthropic, along with prompt design for conversational use cases, is a plus.
- Understanding of platform restrictions, template messages, and approval workflows, including WhatsApp template messaging.
- Experience deploying and hosting applications using Docker, serverless setups, VPS, or PaaS environments.
Additional requirements
- Careful attention to detail with a strong focus on bot reliability and avoiding silent failures or broken conversation paths.
- Ability to work independently and deliver complete bots from start to finish without close supervision.
- A portfolio or examples of bots previously built are required.
- English proficiency at upper-intermediate level (B2) or higher is required.
Project time and compensation
During active phases, the expected workload is about 10 to 20 hours per week. This is only an estimate and not a guaranteed amount of work, and it applies only while the project is active.
Compensation can reach up to the equivalent of USD 60 per hour, depending on experience level and contribution pace. Pay may vary across projects based on scope, complexity, and the expertise needed.
