Role overview
Barnardos Aotearoa is seeking foster caregivers in Auckland who can welcome tamariki and rangatahi into their home and support them through an important period of care and stability. The role centres on providing patience, kindness, consistency, and aroha while helping young people remain connected, build on their strengths, and continue developing.
There is an ongoing need for caregivers in the community, and the organisation is open to people from many different backgrounds, cultures, and family structures. You do not need to have a “perfect” home to be considered.
About Barnardos Foster Care
Barnardos Foster Care works alongside caregivers, whānau, Oranga Tamariki, and other professionals to support tamariki and rangatahi in care. The focus is more than accommodation; it includes everyday moments of encouragement, fun, connection, and support that help children and young people feel secure, grow in confidence, and maintain important relationships.
Types of care
The organisation is currently looking for people who may be able to offer one or more of the following arrangements, depending on their life, home, availability, and support network:
- Respite care: planned temporary care that gives tamariki another safe and caring place to stay while supporting their main caregiving arrangement.
- Short-term care: care provided while longer-term plans are being developed.
- Emergency or immediate care: short-notice care when urgent support is needed.
- Transitional care: a more ongoing caregiving arrangement.
What the role involves
Caregivers are expected to provide a nurturing home and work as part of a wider support team around tamariki and rangatahi. The role also involves being open to assessment, approval, review, training, and ongoing learning, along with completing the required safety checks for adults living in the home.
Support provided
Barnardos offers practical and professional support to caregivers so they are not doing the work alone. This includes access to a foster care social worker, 24/7 support from the Foster Care team, ongoing training, guidance, resources, regular check-ins, and review meetings. A fortnightly board payment is also provided to help with day-to-day caregiving costs.
How to express interest
People who are interested in becoming foster caregivers are encouraged to make contact with the Barnardos Foster Care team to learn more, ask questions, and begin the enquiry process.
Additional information
Caregiving can look different from one household to another. Barnardos is especially interested in people who can offer a steady, supportive presence and who are willing to learn, reflect, and work collaboratively for the wellbeing of tamariki and rangatahi.
