Role Overview

V!VA Retirement Communities is preparing to open V!VA Leaside in 2026, a luxury retirement residence in Toronto’s Leaside area. This opening team role is part of the organization’s launch effort to build an exceptional resident experience from the beginning. The workplace culture emphasizes compassion, innovation, strong service, and a people-first approach.

The dishwasher position is focused on maintaining sanitation, order, and dependable support within the kitchen environment. In addition to core dish area duties, the role may also involve responding as part of the first-response team for resident emergency calls with a caring and supportive manner.

What the Job Involves

  • Take full responsibility for keeping dishware, utensils, and related items clean and properly stored.
  • Operate the dish machine by loading, running, and unloading it as required.
  • Keep the dish machine in good working order and promptly escalate any technical or mechanical issues to the Executive Chef, or to the Sous Chef/Food Service Manager when needed.
  • Track machine temperature and chemical readings to ensure hygienic wash cycles, and document the readings on log sheets.
  • Complete daily temperature and chemical logs during each shift.
  • Ensure there are enough clean plates, glasses, and other tableware available for the dining room and kitchen.
  • Collect, bag, and move garbage to dumpsters and recycling containers.
  • Close down the dish pit correctly, including cleaning the machine and pot sinks, and sweeping and mopping both the enclosed area and the space in front of the doors.
  • Support other team members when additional help is needed.
  • Carry out other related tasks assigned by the Executive Chef or Sous Chef.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate brings a positive attitude, works well with others, and can stay organized in a busy kitchen setting. Experience in a similar environment is expected, along with practical knowledge of dishwashing procedures and health and safety practices. The role also calls for someone who can work independently at times, communicate clearly, and stay calm in a fast-moving, high-volume environment.

Working Conditions and Requirements

  • Applicants must be at least 16 years old.
  • Ability to reach, bend, stoop, and lift up to 40 pounds is required.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment and in hot, humid, and noisy conditions is important.
  • Availability for flexible hours, weekends, and call-ins is expected.
  • A current police check with vulnerable sector screening is required and must be verified annually.
  • A valid Food Handlers Certificate is considered an advantage.
  • Basic English communication skills are needed to understand instructions, read policy documents, and speak with residents and coworkers.
  • Successful candidates must be able to provide proof that they are eligible to work in Canada for the next 6 months.
  • The organization requires all new team members to be vaccinated for COVID-19, with accommodation available for medical or religious reasons in line with applicable Ontario human rights and accessibility laws.
  • The company welcomes applications from people with disabilities and offers accommodations during the hiring process on request.
  • The employer uses AI tools to screen applications.

Compensation and Benefits

The hourly wage for this position is $19.40. Additional benefits mentioned include competitive pay, health benefits, team meals, vacation, and sick pay.
