Role overview
The organization is looking for a Construction Supervisor (Mechanical) to support a major oil and gas project in Qatar. The role is focused on supervising mechanical construction, installation, inspection, pre-commissioning, and completion activities for static and rotating equipment.
Qualification requirements
- A degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering from a university that is internationally recognized is required.
- Formal training in QA/QC-related functions is preferred.
Experience and technical background
- At least 10 years of overall experience in static and rotating equipment installation, with inspection coordination exposure in midstream or downstream oil and gas construction.
- Prior experience as an EPIC contractor supervisor is essential, while experience as a client or PMC supervisor is an added advantage.
- Current work exposure in industrial cities in Qatar and/or other GCC countries is required.
- Strong familiarity with international and industry standards such as ASME, ANSI, ISO, API, NFPA, and Shell DEP is necessary.
- Certification in API 510 and API 653 would be beneficial.
- Solid background in coating systems and procedures, including painting, galvanizing, wrapping, insulation, and refractory lining, is expected; BGAS or API certification would be an advantage.
- Hands-on experience in static and rotating equipment installation, FAT, alignment, inspection, punch closure, pressure testing, pre-commissioning, and mechanical completion is required.
- Ability to read equipment layouts, mechanical drawings, P&IDs, and manufacturer instructions is essential.
- Excellent written and spoken English, along with strong planning, coordination, and organization skills, is needed.
Project environment and site experience
- Experience on greenfield or new-build construction sites.
- Experience on brownfield or live process plant environments.
- Practical knowledge of permit-to-work systems, including isolation and lockout/tagout for live services.
- Experience with tie-ins to live facilities, including testing and integration with existing systems.
- Exposure to stage inspection and testing of construction work against approved ITPs.
- Strong understanding of lifting plans and crane studies; an approved lifting supervisor certificate would be an advantage.
Additional skills
- Strong technical judgment and the ability to prioritize and manage work effectively.
- Good communication, influencing, and coordination skills across different stakeholders.
- Comfort using MS Office tools such as Outlook, Excel, Word, PDF, and PowerPoint, as well as engineering software relevant to the discipline.
Primary responsibilities
- Work closely with the HSE Supervisor on safety matters and lead safe practices on site.
- Escalate progress updates, site events, key issues, trends, and improvement ideas to the discipline construction lead or senior construction supervisor.
- Support review and approval of construction documents such as method statements, JHAs, and MARs, and take part in HSE walkdowns.
- Oversee EPIC contractor activities for static and rotating equipment installation and inspection in line with approved engineering documents and project schedules.
- Attend RFIs as required by approved ITPs, including material receiving inspections, and sign off relevant reports in coordination with the lead construction supervisor.
- Verify the quality of fabrication and erection work, including dimensional accuracy, correct orientation, and compliance with material and design requirements.
- Direct contractors on all mechanical matters related to static and rotating equipment installation.
- Supervise installation execution, FAT, alignment checks, punch list clearing, pressure testing, pre-commissioning, and reinstatement works.
- Manage final mechanical completion inspections and punch closure activities.
- Oversee pre-commissioning to ensure all safety and quality expectations are met.
- Lead site inspections with vendors or suppliers where needed, support PSSR activities, and assist operations during pre-startup and startup when directed.
- Coordinate contractor mobilization at site.
- Check contractor manpower and prior-day work daily to confirm compliance with contract requirements.
- Interpret P&IDs, GA drawings, structural drawings, equipment layouts, mechanical drawings, and manufacturer manuals to support site execution.
- Keep a daily site diary and report anomalies or deviations from contract requirements, along with corrective actions, to the senior supervisor.
- Sign work permits and ensure contractors comply with permit conditions.
- Contribute to as-built drawing development and related documentation.
- Monitor contractor performance, inspect ongoing work, and help prevent incidents by enforcing safety standards.
- Coordinate closely with QA/QC inspectors on all quality-related matters.
