Role overview

Newsweek is hiring an Associate News Editor for its US digital newsroom, with a focus on AI-supported news production. This position suits a journalist who is enthusiastic about the meeting point of emerging technology and strong editorial standards. The role sits at the center of a new approach to journalism, using AI tools to help create several stories each day while maintaining accuracy, clarity, and quality through careful editorial review.

The editor will help integrate generative AI and automation into newsroom workflows, producing, refining, and publishing content at scale so that other journalists can concentrate on beat reporting, interviews, and investigative work. They will also contribute ideas, support coverage planning, and work alongside editors to uphold Newsweek’s editorial expectations.

Key responsibilities

• Create, refine, and publish multiple AI-assisted news stories each day.
• Use editorial judgment to verify that AI-produced copy is accurate, fair, and consistent with journalistic standards.
• Adopt new AI tools and apply them to improve newsroom efficiency and reporting output.
• Move quickly and accurately when covering breaking news.
• Track several information sources to identify developing stories, trends, and relevant topics.
• Suggest original story ideas, subjects, and beats that complement automated coverage.
• Work closely with the US News Editor and broader editorial team on coverage plans and special projects.
• Ensure every published item aligns with Newsweek’s standards for accuracy, fairness, and integrity.
• Carry out additional editorial tasks as needed to support business requirements.

What we’re looking for

The right candidate will bring experience in US news journalism, including politics, current affairs, and culture. They should be comfortable working in a fast-moving newsroom and capable of sourcing, writing, editing, and publishing digital stories to a high standard. Strong editorial instincts and a solid grasp of media law are essential.

This person should be able to work closely with the US News Editor to support day-to-day coverage, sourcing and pitching multiple stories each day while ensuring the work remains accurate, engaging, and aligned with editorial guidelines. Agility and a willingness to adapt to new reporting tools, platforms, and methods are also important.

Schedule and working conditions

This is a full-time onsite position. The work schedule is five days per week from 3:00 pm to 12:00 am ET, and it includes one weekend day. Candidates should also be prepared to work flexible hours and weekends when required.

Compensation

The salary range for this position is $70,000 to $80,000 per year, depending on experience.
