The Role
Tolan is looking for a 3D artist to shape the look and feel of its world. In this role, you will create polished, production-ready models and textures and then help integrate them into the product. The work is highly hands-on, and the team is looking for someone with exceptional modeling and texturing ability who is also comfortable contributing across several parts of a small, fast-moving mobile product.
What You'll Do
- Create and texture characters, accessories, props, environments, and other world elements that define the Tolan experience.
- Adjust materials, shaders, lighting, and visual effects to build a stylized, expressive, and visually rich world.
- Take ownership of assets from early concept exploration through final integration in Unity.
- Partner closely with art and engineering teams to turn ideas into features that ship.
- Use feedback from users and product data to guide what you build and how you refine it.
Who We're Looking For
- An expert modeler and texture artist who can produce stylized 3D assets from the ground up with strong taste, polish, and a clear artistic point of view.
- Someone with a strong eye for design who can improve a concept through the modeling process while keeping the broader product context in mind.
- A versatile generalist who enjoys working across modeling, texturing, materials, optimization, lighting, and VFX.
- A creator who cares about emotion, personality, and expression, and wants assets that make people feel something.
- A candidate with a portfolio that demonstrates outstanding craft, particularly in stylized 3D modeling and texturing.
- Someone who understands performance constraints such as texture memory, draw calls, polygon budgets, batching, LODs, and compression, especially for mobile 3D.
Bonus Points If You Have
- Experience contributing to character-led products where personality and expressiveness are important.
- Shipped products in Unity or Unreal.
- Worked with blendshapes, shaders, or VFX from the ground up.
- Delivered stylized 3D work for mobile, games, AR/VR, or other real-time interactive products.
- Built tools or scripts in C# or used AI to accelerate production workflows.
Additional Information
This position is based in San Francisco, CA and is a full-time, onsite role.
