Role overview

The Train Conductor position is a permanent, on-site railway role based in Prince George, British Columbia. Successful candidates who accept the offer and live within one hour of Prince George may receive a $10,000 signing bonus. This is a safety-critical job in a 24/7 rail environment, with paid training and a strong emphasis on teamwork, accountability, and operational excellence.

What the role involves

As part of a two- or three-person train crew, the conductor helps move trains, rail cars, and locomotives in rail yards and along the route. The job includes coordinating train assembly, completing ground duties outside the locomotive, operating track switches, handling rail cars, and supporting emergency repairs when needed.

Working conditions

Work follows a flexible schedule with reliable, regular attendance expected in a round-the-clock rail operation.
Night work, weekends, holidays, overtime, and time away from home for extended periods may be required.
The role requires the ability to push, pull, lift, and carry up to 90 pounds.
Most work is performed outdoors in changing weather and environmental conditions.
Daily tasks may include using railcar and locomotive devices such as uncoupling levers and handbrakes.
Employees must be able to climb railcar ladders, hold onto equipment while riding along the side of a train, and walk for long periods.
Frequent bending, stooping, squatting, and kneeling are part of the work.
Medical fitness standards apply, including the ability to identify and distinguish signal colours as required by railway rules.

Responsibilities

Follow all train orders, signals, operating rules, and safety regulations.
Exchange and act on spoken and written instructions related to moving and placing rail cars.
Build and break down trains in the yard and handle rail cars en route.
Read, interpret, and pass along signals to support safe movement of trains and locomotives.
Use track switches to direct locomotives and rail cars to the correct route.
Check train and equipment condition during operations.
Make sound decisions in unfamiliar situations or emergencies.
Stay in regular contact with Rail Traffic Control, other crews, and internal departments using handheld radio communication.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
Ability to write and pass safety and rules examinations, with later Locomotive Engineer qualification required to keep seniority and employment, as per the collective agreement.
Must obtain and keep a Conductor Rule Card.
Valid passport that permits entry to and re-entry from Canada and the United States, where applicable to the location.
Strong spoken and written communication skills in English or French, depending on location.

Preferred background

Experience in similar operational, safety-focused, or regulated environments is an advantage.
College, vocational, or technical school completion, or prior Freight Conductor experience, is considered beneficial.

Paid training

New hires complete a full paid training program at the CN Campus in Winnipeg, Manitoba. CN covers transportation, accommodation, and meals during campus training. To become a working conductor, candidates must successfully complete the full program, including written exams, physical assessments, and field training.

Training structure

9 to 10 weeks at CN Campus for classroom learning and exams.
11 or more weeks at the home terminal for on-the-job training and qualifying trips.
The exact number of training weeks depends on terminal needs and the union agreement.
