Katherine Town Council is looking for a community-minded and proactive Ranger to join the Infrastructure and Environment team in Katherine East, Northern Territory. What the role involves

In this role, you will handle a wide mix of compliance and community-facing duties. The work includes enforcing Council by-laws, supporting animal control and pound activities, dealing with complaints such as nuisance animals and parking issues, carrying out patrols, and issuing infringement notices when necessary. You will also help educate the public, prepare written reports and evidence briefs, and appear in court when required.

The position is well suited to someone who can work on their own initiative, communicate calmly and clearly in difficult situations, and feel comfortable spending time outdoors and engaging with the community.

Key duties

• Apply Council local laws, rules, and internal policies in day-to-day enforcement work.
• Carry out animal management tasks and support pound operations.
• Look into complaints involving nuisance animals, parking, and related matters.
• Patrol assigned areas and issue infringement notices where required.
• Deliver guidance and education to members of the public.
• Prepare reports, evidence summaries, and attend court proceedings when needed.
• Contribute to community safety and regulatory compliance programs.

About you

To be considered, you should have experience in a Ranger, compliance, or similar regulatory position. You will need strong communication and conflict resolution abilities, along with the confidence to interpret legislation and Council policies accurately. The job also requires the ability to work independently and make sound decisions.

Required or preferred credentials and tools include a current Northern Territory driver’s licence, a current HR licence, proficiency with Microsoft Office, a Certificate IV in Local Government Investigation or a willingness to obtain it, and Firearms Licence A and B or a willingness to obtain them. Experience in local government and qualifications related to animal management will be viewed favourably.
