About the Company
Shane Stone Builders is a locally established construction business that has been delivering quality work across the Whanganui area since 2008. The company is now seeking an experienced, driven Project Manager to become part of its expanding team.
Role Overview
This position will begin with oversight of a varied portfolio that includes insurance-related work, Ministry of Education assignments, and Enable projects. Over time, the scope may broaden to include new home builds, commercial work, and alterations or additions.
Pricing and Tendering
- Develop estimates, pricing, and tender submissions across residential, commercial, insurance, and maintenance work.
- Examine drawings, specifications, and project papers to prepare accurate costings.
- Determine labour, subcontractor, and material needs for each job.
- Support profitability and budget reviews for projects.
Project Delivery
- Run several projects at once from start through to final completion.
- Keep work on schedule, within budget, and aligned with quality expectations.
- Review build plans and documentation to confirm readiness and compliance.
- Track progress closely and address issues that could affect timing or costs.
- Ensure delivery matches plans, specifications, and client requirements.
Subcontractor and Resource Coordination
- Work with subcontractors, suppliers, and internal staff to keep operations moving efficiently.
- Plan labour and subcontractor scheduling to protect project timelines.
- Manage resourcing so that materials and workers are available when required.
- Adjust resourcing plans when project conditions change unexpectedly.
Client and Stakeholder Management
- Communicate professionally with clients, consultants, subcontractors, and suppliers.
- Strive to provide excellent results and a consistently high level of client service.
- Deal with insurance providers, the Ministry of Education, Enable, and other stakeholders as needed.
- Attend site visits and client meetings when required.
Health, Safety, and Compliance
- Make sure projects follow the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, environmental obligations, and company safety procedures.
- Encourage safe work habits and uphold strong safety standards across sites.
- Ensure environmental and quality practices remain compliant with legislation and sustainable methods.
- Check that subcontractors meet site safety expectations.
Quality Assurance
- Confirm that workmanship aligns with company standards and job specifications.
- Carry out regular site checks to monitor quality and progress.
- Identify defects or issues early and see them through to resolution.
Administration and Reporting
- Keep project records accurate and up to date.
- Participate in weekly management meetings and contribute to discussions.
- Use project management tools and software to monitor progress, budgets, and workflows.
- Support scheduling, forecasting, and reporting tasks.
Experience and Qualifications
A minimum of 2 years of experience in project management within the construction industry is required. A background as a qualified builder is preferred but not mandatory. Experience in quantity surveying, estimating, or project pricing would be an advantage, as would experience with residential, commercial, insurance, or maintenance projects. A full New Zealand driver licence is required.
Skills and Personal Attributes
The right person will bring strong communication and relationship-building ability, excellent planning and time management, and the capacity to juggle several priorities at once. The role also calls for confidence using Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Project, with SimPRO experience seen as helpful. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, a positive attitude, initiative, and a professional, team-oriented approach are important.
Terms and Conditions
Applicants must be New Zealand citizens or hold New Zealand residency, and they must already live in the Whanganui region or be prepared to relocate. Candidates on temporary or work visas will not be considered. This is a full-time permanent role based onsite in Whanganui.
