Field Engineer

Role overview

This position is centred on the construction and upkeep of telephone exchanges and data centres that support connectivity across New Zealand. Based in Dunedin, it also covers field work across the wider Otago and Southland regions. The work is practical and varied, and you will join a close-knit team that supports one another.

You will be working with a range of networking and telecommunications technologies, including network transport, core IP nodes, fibre installation, inside plant systems, and legacy and telephony/PSTN environments. The employer will supply the training, tools, PPE and vehicle needed to perform the role effectively, and encourages people to expand their capability into new technologies rather than expecting experience in every system from day one.

What the role involves

• Supporting ISP equipment in the field, including IP, Ethernet and PSTN systems
• Working with network transport platforms, including older technologies and OTN
• Completing fibre build and provisioning tasks such as OFDF patching and tie-cable installation
• Performing Ethernet and switchboard cabling work
• Using fibre and telecommunications test equipment
• Investigating faults and carrying out maintenance support
• Maintaining installation quality and compliance with QA requirements
• Following safe work practices and meeting health and safety obligations
• Providing courteous, practical customer service
• Working on your own initiative while knowing when to escalate issues

Requirements

• At least 5 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent background, along with a willingness to develop new technical skills
• Practical understanding of exchange environments and network nodes
• Ability to follow procedures and tasks from technical manuals accurately
• A current New Zealand driver’s licence
• Comfort in a busy, changing work environment and a consistently positive attitude
• Availability for rostered standby, call-out work and occasional extended hours, shared evenly within the team
• All standby, call-out and overtime hours are paid according to standard rates

Preferred experience

• Exposure to network transport, including legacy systems and OTN
• Experience working with NOCs, Level 2 support teams, customers, vendors or third parties
• Hands-on experience with fibre and telecommunications testing
