Role Overview
National Railroad Safety Services, Inc. (NRSS) is hiring an Employee In Charge (EIC) in Wells, Nevada to support on-track safety work. This position plays an important part in making sure railroad right-of-way activities are carried out safely for freight railroads, transit systems, state DOTs, and other rail industry partners.
What You’ll Do
- Set up and manage on-track protection measures such as derails, track signs, and related safety equipment.
- Coordinate worksite activity so the crew can operate safely around active tracks.
- Maintain radio communication with dispatchers and train crews regarding the safety status of the work zone.
- Lead mandatory job briefings before any crew member enters the track, ensuring the briefing is clear, complete, and easy to follow.
- Prepare daily field reports and document any rule violations observed during the shift.
- Help enforce railroad, state, and federal safety requirements at all times.
What We’re Looking For
- Comfort using tablets, smartphones, and other communication devices to support train-movement coordination.
- Strong oral and written communication abilities.
- Careful attention to detail and strong organizational habits.
- Willingness and ability to travel for long stretches, including periods that may last several months.
- Valid driver’s license.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- At least 2 years of railroad experience, preferably in the maintenance of way department.
- Ability to complete federal, client-specific, and/or company-specific training successfully.
Work Environment
This is a field-based role performed alongside active railroad tracks. Travel is expected for approximately 50% to 85% of the time.
Compensation and Benefits
The pay range for this role is $23.00 to $37.00 per hour, depending on experience. Benefits include medical, dental, and vision coverage, life insurance, short-term and long-term disability insurance, paid vacation and holidays, and a 401(k) retirement plan.
