Distribution Inspector - Network

Role overview

This is a permanent operational position based in Newport/Gwent, Wales. The role sits within network distribution and focuses on helping protect water supply quality, controlling leakage, supporting field operations, and keeping accurate records across company systems. The advertised salary band is £28,065 to £31,887.

Key responsibilities

• Work collaboratively with the wider team on a day-to-day basis and respond effectively alongside other departments during Silver and Gold incidents.
• Help achieve and sustain leakage performance targets across the area.
• Use a range of methods to reduce leakage and ensure Welsh Water’s leakage goals are met.
• Keep GIS information current by sending updates to the GIS bureau so the organisation can maintain accurate and high-quality data.
• Follow company health and safety rules carefully, keeping the wellbeing of colleagues and customers central to every task.
• Coordinate with distribution colleagues during routine work and emergencies to identify practical network or leakage solutions.
• Enter accurate information into relevant IT systems each day and follow correct working methods on site, both during and outside normal hours.
• Carry out visual site inspections where needed.
• Represent Welsh Water during the full lifecycle of projects and support partner organisations through development, planning, approvals, and statutory processes.
• Handle challenging customer or site situations professionally and calmly, aiming to resolve issues quickly.
• Suggest ways to improve the network based on observations and operational experience.
• Manage your own workload efficiently, prioritise routine tasks with limited supervision, and deal with deadlines and changing demands.
• Take on other reasonable duties as needed to support business requirements.

Candidate profile

Applicants should bring a full current driving licence, practical customer service experience, computer literacy, and a strong interest in putting customers first. The role also calls for effective communication, good interpersonal ability, sound knowledge of the water sector, and confidence using Microsoft software such as Excel and Word. You should be comfortable working independently or as part of a team, able to build productive relationships with internal teams, partners, and contractors, and capable of working to tight deadlines in difficult circumstances while remaining fair and unbiased.

Working arrangements

To support operational efficiency, candidates are expected to be based in the Newport/Gwent area. A company van is provided. Normal working hours are 8:00am to 4:00pm, and the role includes participation in a standby rota on a one-week-in-five basis. Interviews are planned for the week commencing 29 June.
