Assignment overview
This is a short online volunteering placement with UN-Habitat Kenya based in Kenya and delivered entirely remotely. The engagement lasts 8 weeks and is structured around task-based contributions rather than a contract. Volunteers do not receive any financial allowance or other entitlements, but they are issued a certificate of appreciation after successful completion. The United Nations Volunteer programme is not responsible for the recruitment decision or for any collaboration that follows selection.
The role sits within the Urban Crises Response and Humanitarian Affairs section, which works on prevention, response, and recovery in urban crisis contexts. Much of this work is underrepresented publicly, so the assignment is designed to help transform field updates, impact evidence, and milestones into strong digital communications that raise visibility, support partnerships, and explain the meaning and value of urban crisis response to wider audiences.
Mission and context
UN-Habitat works to advance sustainable human settlements and ensure adequate shelter for all. Its broader mission is to help cities and human settlements develop in ways that are socially and environmentally sustainable. With urbanization accelerating worldwide, especially across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean, the organisation highlights the need for better planning, stronger infrastructure, and more inclusive approaches so that urban growth becomes an opportunity rather than a crisis.
The section’s communications work is intended to bring visibility to technical humanitarian and urban response efforts that often stay hidden from key stakeholders. The assignment will help create a focused digital presence that turns technical insights into accessible storytelling for partners, donors, and the public.
Assignment objectives
The volunteer will support a targeted communications initiative with the goal of growing awareness of the section’s work, improving audience engagement, and strengthening relationships with institutional partners. The assignment also aims to build a clear and professional LinkedIn presence while using Facebook as a feeder channel to drive attention toward LinkedIn.
Key responsibilities
- Set clear thematic content pillars for the LinkedIn channel centered on the section’s work, such as urban resilience and crisis response.
- Keep the messaging polished, credible, and empathetic, while translating technical or humanitarian language into content that is easy for partners, donors, and the public to understand.
- Develop a plan to move traffic from the section’s Facebook audience toward LinkedIn.
- Work with project teams to gather raw updates, photos, and milestones, then turn them into engaging posts written in the Director’s professional voice.
- Prepare LinkedIn content using appropriate formats, including image or video posts that highlight live interventions in crisis-affected areas and slide-style posts summarising toolkits, manuals, or policy papers.
- Maintain a rolling monthly content calendar that supports a steady output of 2 to 3 strong posts each week without requiring daily intervention.
- Create Facebook content that highlights key updates and includes a direct call to action encouraging followers to visit LinkedIn for fuller context and discussion.
- Use major moments and high-traffic periods, such as the World Urban Forum, to amplify Facebook promotions and direct users to the LinkedIn profile.
- Engage actively on behalf of the section by liking, commenting on, and sharing posts from institutional partners, donors, and other UN agencies to increase visibility.
- Monitor comments and messages across both platforms and identify partnership leads, technical questions, or other important engagement for escalation to leadership.
- Review monthly analytics, track follower growth on LinkedIn, assess how effectively Facebook traffic is converting, and summarise what content performed best so the strategy can be improved over time.
Assignment requirements
Applicants should be highly organised, creative, and comfortable working in communications with a strong social media focus. The role calls for someone who can serve as a digital link between field teams and the public, while also bringing strategic thinking, storytelling ability, and graphic/content presentation skills.
Candidates should have at least 1 year of substantive professional experience managing corporate social media platforms. Previous work samples must be provided, and applicants are expected to submit a CV that clearly shows experience relevant to a similar assignment.
English fluency is required.
