Biomedical Scientist

Role overview

Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a motivated and proactive Biomedical Scientist with laboratory experience to join the Blood Sciences Clinical Laboratory at the Royal Surrey County Hospital. The post sits within Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services, part of one of the UK’s largest pathology networks.

What the role involves

You will contribute to the safe and efficient delivery of Blood Sciences services and support the day-to-day running of the laboratory. The role requires knowledge across Blood Sciences, specifically Haematology and Blood Transfusion or Biochemistry, along with the ability to work effectively with colleagues and provide clear leadership and communication.

Once competency has been achieved, you will be expected to join the shift rota covering a 24/7 working week. You may also be asked to work across other Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Service sites when needed to support quality, training and service delivery.

Laboratory structure and training

The department is moving toward full multidisciplinary working, so the successful applicant will receive training across all sections of the laboratory and be expected to support unsocial hours as part of a multi-skilled team. Rotation will include Haematology, Coagulation, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry.

The laboratory is equipped with Abbott Alinity H & CI analysers, ACL TOP 550, Immucor NEO Iris Blood Group Analysers and other systems. Prior experience with these platforms is helpful but not mandatory.

Quality and accreditation

A key part of the position is helping to maintain UKAS ISO 15189:2022 and MHRA accreditation by taking an active role in the quality management system. The laboratory is accredited to ISO 15189:2022 and MHRA standards and holds IBMS training status.

Candidate profile

You should be enthusiastic, adaptable and willing to develop your own skills while also helping others grow. For a trainee route, you must be able to register with the HCPC and have made progress with the IBMS Registration Portfolio.
