Quantity Surveyor

Overview

An expanding civil engineering and groundworks contractor in Poole, Dorset is looking to appoint a Quantity Surveyor on a permanent, full-time basis. The role offers a salary of up to £60,000 depending on experience, along with a package.

You will work closely with the Commercial Manager to oversee the commercial side of infrastructure, highways, groundworks, drainage, and external works projects. The remit covers the full project lifecycle, starting at pre-construction and continuing through to final account.

Key Responsibilities

• Handle payment applications and prepare valuations.
• Measure completed work and assess its value accurately.
• Manage subcontractor accounts, including valuations.
• Prepare, negotiate, and close out variations and compensation events.
• Maintain cost reports, forecasts, and project budgets.
• Produce CVRs and other commercial reporting documents.
• Source and procure subcontractors and suppliers.
• Oversee contract administration and ensure commercial compliance.
• Track project progress and highlight commercial risks and opportunities.
• Support the negotiation and settlement of final accounts.

Candidate Profile

The employer is seeking someone with prior quantity surveying experience in civil engineering, groundworks, highways, infrastructure, or a closely related area. Strong commercial judgement, a good grasp of construction contracts, and confidence in managing subcontractor accounts are important.

You should be comfortable balancing several projects and priorities at once, and able to communicate and negotiate effectively. Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office and commercial reporting tools is also required, together with a full UK driving licence.

Qualifications

A degree, HNC, or HND in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, or another relevant construction subject is preferred. Equivalent hands-on industry experience may also be accepted.

Desirable Experience

It would be an advantage to have experience working with NEC3 or NEC4 contracts, as well as knowledge of highways and infrastructure schemes. Experience preparing CVRs and detailed cost reports is also beneficial. RICS membership, or progress toward a relevant professional qualification, is desirable.
