Role summary
As a Cook in the Canadian Armed Forces, you will create wholesome meals and food items for military personnel and employees of National Defence. The role combines large-scale food preparation, service, safety, and equipment care in a military setting.
Key duties
- Prepare and serve food ranging from cafeteria-style meals to multi-course dining for military guests and civilian dignitaries.
- Support the receipt, handling, and oversight of food and non-food inventory.
- Follow occupational health and safety practices at all times.
- Accommodate dietary needs linked to religious and spiritual requirements.
- Maintain food safety standards and safeguard Defence requirements.
- Use, clean, and keep food service tools, equipment, and facilities in good condition.
Work setting
Cooks can be posted in many environments in Canada or may deploy overseas. Most work at bases and wings, while others support land-based units or serve on ships and submarines.
Those entering the Regular Force are posted to their first base after completing the required training. Posting flexibility may be limited, so relocation during a career is likely. Primary Reserve Force members join through a specific Reserve unit and generally work part time at that unit without a requirement to move. Reserve schedules usually include one night each week and some weekends, with possible access to full-time work.
Entry routes
There are direct entry options as well as paid education pathways.
Education and application criteria
The minimum academic requirement is completion of the provincial standard for Grade 10, or Secondary 4 in Quebec, including Grade 10 workplace math or Math 414 / CTS 4 in Quebec. A college diploma or certificate in food services or culinary arts is considered an advantage. The Forces will assess whether your program aligns with the occupation and may move you directly into the required on-the-job training after basic training. Foreign education may also be accepted.
Paid education option
Through the Non-Commissioned Member Subsidized Training and Education Plan (NCMSTEP), selected recruits may be paid to attend an approved Canadian college diploma program. During summer months, students complete basic training and on-the-job training. They receive a full-time salary, medical and dental coverage, and vacation with full pay in return for a service commitment. Applicants interested in this route must apply both to the Forces and to the appropriate college.
Training
Training begins with Basic Military Qualification at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec. This phase builds core military knowledge and skills and is physically demanding because recruits must meet the Canadian Armed Forces fitness standard.
Occupational training takes place at the Canadian Forces Logistics Training Centre in Borden, Ontario, where candidates learn through theory, demonstrations, and hands-on practice.

- Unit conversions and equivalents
- Introductory baking and meat preparation
- Cooking for small and large groups across a wide menu range

Additional specialty development may be available through formal courses and workplace learning, including instructional techniques, Red Seal certification, submarine service, Flight Steward duties, Food & Beverage Manager certification, and the National Food Safety Training Program.
Part-time service
This occupation is also available on a part-time basis with the Army, Navy, and Air Force at selected locations across Canada. Reserve Force members generally serve with a local division in their community and may balance service with school or civilian employment. They are trained to the same standard as Regular Force members, are paid during training, are not posted, and are not required to relocate. They may volunteer for a transfer to another base or for deployments inside or outside Canada. Reserve members are typically paid 92.8% of Regular Force pay and may receive benefits and pension contributions.
