Commercial Director

Role overview

London Ambulance Service NHS Trust is expanding its commercial capability as part of a wider three-year strategy focused on stronger, more structured commercial activity. This role has been created to lead that effort and to raise both income and profitability across the Trust’s commercial portfolio.

The Commercial Director will carry personal accountability for achieving commercial income and surplus goals, and for overseeing the overall performance of the portfolio. The position is expected to help develop a more mature commercial function and support delivery of the Trust’s financial ambition: increasing commercial revenue from an annual baseline of about £4 million to roughly £8 million, while generating around £1 million surplus by 2028/29. Delivery will be measured against agreed milestones and planned trajectories.

Key focus areas

The role is centred on four main areas of work:

• Commercial portfolio oversight: creating a joined-up view of revenue, cost, margin, and risk across all commercial activity so decisions can be prioritised and financial ownership is clear.
• Revenue expansion and bid leadership: identifying and developing new income opportunities, growing existing streams, leading or coordinating bid writing, carrying out commercial due diligence, supporting contract mobilisation, shaping competitive propositions, and engaging external stakeholders to communicate the Trust’s value.
• Contract negotiation and management: leading negotiations for new agreements and actively managing existing contracts to improve return, control expenditure, and reduce commercial exposure.
• Commercial delivery enablement: working with internal teams and external partners to make sure opportunities are practical to deliver, properly resourced, and able to generate the expected income and surplus.

Reporting line and location

This position reports to the Director of Finance. The base location is the Trust’s headquarters in Waterloo, with some reasonable travel required across other sites.
