Role overview
This position is for a specialist Clinical Data Analyst supporting the Urology service at North Bristol NHS Trust. The role focuses on building, running, analysing, and interpreting complex clinical datasets that contribute to patient care, service improvement, audit activity, and research work.
What the role involves
You will work independently as well as alongside clinical, managerial, and research teams to develop and look after clinical databases. A major part of the job is maintaining strong data quality, applying validation checks, and ensuring proper governance across all datasets.
The post holder will turn raw information into clear insight, create timely reports, and provide analysis that is clinically relevant. This will support comparison with national standards and help meet both local and national audit and research needs.
Key impact of the role
The role is central to helping the multidisciplinary team understand data, spot patterns and risks, and identify opportunities to improve services. It supports informed decision-making across the Urology service by translating data into practical recommendations.
Detailed duties
As the specialist analyst for Urology, you will offer expert input on clinical data handling, assurance, governance, and interpretation. You will be responsible for creating, maintaining, and reviewing complex databases, and for making sure data remains accurate through validation, reconciliation, and governance processes.
You will produce reports, dashboards, and performance measures that feed into clinical governance, quality improvement work, audits, research studies, and national benchmarking exercises. A significant part of the post includes managing a tracking database for around 850 bladder cancer patients, including monitoring treatment pathways, surveillance timings, and follow-up adherence, while highlighting any patient safety concerns that need escalation.
The job also involves working with clinicians, researchers, and trial teams to support data capture, reporting, and delivery of research, including studies with national and international reach. In addition, you will help train and guide staff, combine information from multiple sources, and contribute specialist analytical support to service development, grant applications, publications, and improvement projects. All work must align with NHS data standards, information governance requirements, and research regulations.
